I recently volunteered at the Goshen Valley Boys Ranch...
About 1 hr. north of downtown Atlanta. I knew the Boys Ranch existed because I had heard about it over the years at Lutheran Church of the Redeemer, where I am a member. After all these years, the spirit finally moved in me, and I gave Zach Blend a call, the son of John Blend, who founded the ranch. Zach was very welcoming and hospitable towards me, and was able to match my interests, talents and availability with the boys at the ranch. I went up on Tuesday mornings over several weeks to spend time working with the boys. Our focus was on the practice of journaling, and its importance in one's spiritual growth in Christ. I really enjoyed working with the boys because they were receptive and engaged in the journal exercises and our discussions afterwards. What struck me most about my volunteer experience was how much I gained from it. It became clear to me very quickly that I benefited just as much through my time with boys as they did with me. I highly recommend volunteering in any way, shape or form, as I know that whatever your interest or availability there is a way that God can use you in ministry at the Goshen Valley Boys Ranch.
